Tuesday, September 20th is the date - Sachse Public Library is the place where you want to dock your boat at 4 PM for the Pirate Party. This is a fun time for kids.

Volunteers to help with the party will be greatly appreciated - besides ... who says you can't have fun too?? (And do not forget to sign the volunteer timesheet!)

Formula For A Successful Event

We have an important event coming up with the Friends of Sachse Library on September 27th. It is a special author event featuring three local North Texas authors (Mary DeMuth, Dr Richard Mabry, and Anne Mateer) and we have been working with them as well as other channels to have a successful event.

Having partners is one way to make this event successful. One of our partners is Barnes and Noble at Firewheel Mall. They will be providing copies of the authors books for sale (and signing) at the event.

Appealing to the interests of others is also important for the success of the event. In this case, our event is called Inspired Writing - A Tale of Three Writers. It is an opportunity to meet these authors and learn how they were inspired to write.

Of course getting the word out about the event is important as well. So far the word has been put out in the Sachse Parks and Recreation Issue and the City of Sachse news mailout. Another way this event is being announced is through GuideLive(dot)com.

These are obviously broad ways to get the word out. Probably the most successful way to get the word out is on a personal level - mouth to mouth. Please let others you know about the event.

Volunteering in August

I think a hand for all the volunteers at Sachse Public Library is in order!!! And Thanks as well!! There are so many ways to volunteer at the Library - sometimes it just is not reported. Let me urge you to sign up on the Library volunteer time sheet when you help out.

For the month of August, there was a total of 122 hours of reported volunteering at our library. Actually an additional 18 hours can be added by including those attending the Friends of Sachse Library meeting. (Did you know our monthly meetings ARE considered volunteer time?) That makes the total 140 hours of reported volunteer hours.

Members of Friends accounted for 97.5 of the volunteer hours and other community members volunteered for 42.5 of the hours.

Our totals are only as good as the reported hours are concerned - who knows how many hours are not reported? For example, did you help out at the Fancy Nancy Tea Party? If you did, did you sign up on the volunteer time sheet? If you forgot, please sign the sheet the next time you are at the library. Undoubtedly, you feel it is important to support your library by volunteering - signing the volunteer time sheet is just another way to show your community pride.

The Influence of The Library

I am currently reading something I read when I was just an early teen - some Sherlock Holmes. It brought back some memories for me. One of the things my mother did was take us to the library to check out books and Sherlock Holmes was a favorite of mine. I enjoyed checking out books and reading them - especially mysteries.

I still like to read but I have learned that there is so much more to do with the library - it is not just a place to check out books. There is a whole lot more available to the community at the library. It is a place with things for all ages - children learning to read, students doing research, people looking for jobs, people meeting with shared interests, and more!!!

How important is the library to you? What ways does it influence you? Speak out for YOUR LIBRARY!!!

Fancy Nancy Tea Party - Sept 6th

Reporting Volunteer Hours at the Library

Did you know ... that there is a signup sheet at the library for volunteers? Any time you do some volunteer work for the library, it is important that you signup so that your volunteer time is reported.

Is this how you feel? "I just volunteer to help out. It is a personal thing and I do not feel it is necessary to report it."

Well ..., it is great that it is important enough to you to volunteer at the library. It certainly is a personal thing. Even so, there are some good reasons this needs to be reported.

The library is important to the community. It is important for what it gives to the community but it is also important enough for the community to give back to it. Volunteers KNOW this!!!

By reporting volunteer hours we show how we feel about our library as a community. Isn't that important since decisions affecting the library might be made differently when the volunteering community is displaying how we feel about the library through our actions?

So ... next time you volunteer be sure to sign the volunteer log and show your pride in our community library.

Volunteers are a very important part of the Library (and the Friends of the Library). There are so many ways they can help. Here is a short list of how a volunteer can help.

- Reshelving books or straightening out the shelves.
- Help is needed with Library activities - especially those involving kids.
- Organizing projects like book sales, etc.
- Coordinating and planning special events.
- Helping with publicity and communications.

Again ... these are only a few things a volunteer can do. The biggest challenge is finding out talents people have and using those talents.

What are some of the ways you can think of where volunteers can be used at the library?

Neighbors Read - Why Dewey - A Review

The question "Why Dewey?" is a good question. Why was Dewey chosen as the book for the Neighbors Read program? I spoke to Dolores Greenwald, the Library Director at Sachse Library and she shared one of the reasons with me. I am going to paraphrase a little - okay - a lot - because I am going to use something like analogy - I think.

I am sure you have seen those cat food commercials. They have the different flavors like chicken and etc. This is one of the reasons Dewey was chosen for the Neighbors Read program. No - not because of the different flavors of cat food but because of the different "flavors" of the book. The Dewey book comes in different "flavors" for different age groups. You have Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched The World which targets the adult/older readers. You also have Dewey The Library Cat: A True Story for the younger readers. Then there is the picture book Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library for infants and preschoolers. Dewey is the purr...fect choice for a community reads program because of the broad range in the community it is available for.

Another good reason to select Dewey for the Neighbors Read program is because it is an inspirational book. Personally, I did not expect a whole lot from the book because I thought it was just a book about a cat - and I am not really a cat person. However, as I read the book, I discovered it was MORE than a book about a cat - so much more!!! As you may know, each person who reads probably has a different perception of the book they read. That is only natural since we are all different. I think the thing that makes this book a good book is the lessons we learn from the book.

First, here is a very brief summary of the book. Dewey the cat is abandoned in the book drop at the local library. He is found and rescued by the librarian. He becomes a part of the "library" and relates to a lot of the patrons of the library. He becomes an important part not only the library but also to the community. As a matter of fact he becomes a draw to this small-town library from all over the world. One of the things that happens as a result of Dewey is a bigger role the library plays in the community.

Now back to what I said earlier about lessons. Should any library become a cat library? Even the book does not suggest this. Cats are different just like people are and what happens in one library is likely to be different from another library. Sure ... we want our library to play an important part in our community but we have to discover what our "cat" will be. What will inspire our library / our community like Dewey did for the small-town library in Iowa?

Another lesson and also a reason for not being a cat library. Having a cat takes work and more than one person has to be responsible when it comes to taking care of a "library cat". Work is not a bad thing - the important thing is sharing the work. Whatever we discover the "cat" will be for our library, we need to realize that it will involve work - work we should share.

Finally, another lesson we learn from the book. As good as it was having Dewey as a part of the library, and as many people who enjoyed having Dewey around, there will also be those who are not going to be happy. We need to keep in mind our goal and the reason(s) our library is here. It is a community library and we will not be able to please everybody all the time. Our focus should be is it good for the community - and if it is .... GREAT!!!

Sachse Library To "re"OPEN

Hello Friends!

Great news! The library will be opening at 12:00 noon on Thursday, April 7th. The staff is SO happy to be getting everything back to normal.

The repairs are not quite finished, but we expect all the work to be finished by Friday. (Cross your fingers!) There will be cleaners working in the library (probably Monday), but we would love to have some volunteers on Tuesday to help the staff get everything unpacked and settled, and to give the library a final cleaning. Feel free to come any time between 12:00 and 8:00 pm.

First, at the recent Chamber of Commerce Banquet - March 4ths "All Shook Up" an award was given to the Director of our Library - Dolores Greenwald. Let's hear it for Dolores!!!!

Also recognized at the March Chamber of Commerce luncheon as Member of the Month - Friends of the Sachse Public Library!!! Give yourself a pat on the back!!!

GOOD NEWS about our Library

First OLD NEWS but good news nonetheless. At the City council meeting on March 7th, there was a formal presentation of the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association 2010 Achievement of Excellence Award to the Sachse Public Library. That's RIGHT!!! The library and staff got this award again. Does that make the 4th time our library has gotten this award? CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Now more GOOD NEWS!!! As you may know, the library has been closed due to weather related damages that occurred in February. Well repairs are now seriously underway and we are finally looking forward to getting our library back open to the community. Final repairs are scheduled for the week of Monday, March 28th and we should be getting things all settled for the reopening shortly after that. I can speak for myself (as well as others I have spoken to) and say "ALRIGHT!!! We have been waiting in anticipation."

IDEAS are sometimes like seeds

Ideas are sometimes like seeds - they have to be scattered around. Sometimes nothing may happen right away. But then after a little time passes (I guess it is called a "germination period") and the conditions become right, then the idea starts to take root and something will spring from it.

I think some of the things we will be seeing happening with the Friends and our Library are just like that. I know some of the things we are planning are not first time ideas - they have been suggested before. The thing that matters is now seems to be the time when the conditions are right.

The most important thing is we NEED IDEAS. IDEAS DO GROW. They need to be shared. If you are an IDEA person please come to our next meeting which is scheduled Tuesday, Jan 25th at 7:00PM at Sachse Library.

But what if you are not an IDEA person? What if you are an ACTION person. You ARE needed as well and are encouraged to come to our meeting as well!!!

Well..., how about a play on that phrase - coming soon to a library near you. There are so many possibilities you really need to check it out.

Oh ..., we know the library gets new books - heck ..., isn't that what the library all about? Not really!!! There is so much more libraries offer these days besides books. Just to name a few, your library may have internet access, movies, ebooks, and activities of all sorts.

We'll meet at the library parking lot at 6:30 to carpool to Samuel Grand Park for 7:00 early entry and reserved seating (on the ground).
Bring your picnic supper, $8 plus $1 to help with parking, and a blanket or sand chair (or you can rent two sand chairs for $5)
Marilyn is bringing a big cooler for your cold drinks.
Dress cool. You might want a hat or sunglasses for the first half-hour of sun, then the shade and the breezes come along.

Reference USA by infoUSA is an online database containing profiles of more than 13 million U.S. businesses and 120 million U.S. residents. The database is useful for compiling mailing lists and offers the capability to limit searches by zip code, city, state, sales, number of employees, and other options.

Reference USA is easy to use and designed so that even computer novices can find the information they need. Once you're set up, all you need is Internet access and a browser. You can use the database either at the Library or remotely. In order to get set up, you must have an active Sachse Public Library card. For more information, please stop by the Library or call 972.530.8966.

You will need a Sachse Library card in order to access this database. Here are some instructions on how to use it.

1-Go to the library's page on the city of Sachse's web site. http://www.cityofsachse.com/library/

2-Click on the link for the Research/Databases. This will take you to the Library Research/Databases page.

3-Click on the link Reference USA in the list on this page. This will open the Reference USA Log on web page. You will need your Sachse Library card number in order to log on for this database.

4-Enter your card number and click on the Log On button. This will open the Reference USA web page with links to the available databases. Currently the available databases include U.S. Businesses and U.S. Residential.

Here is just another example of how our library provides more for it's patrons. If you are currently unemployed or looking for another job, you may need to write a resume. Sachse Library can help provide an excellent tool to help write your resume. This tool is called ResumeMaker. It does more than provide a tool to write your resume. It also gives helpful hints in writing your resume. In addition, your resume will be saved online at the ResumeMaker site.

You can access ResumeMaker on the internet by going to the city of Sachse website at www.cityofsachse.com.

Select the Library from the Jump to Department drop down list.

When the Library Overview page is displayed, click on the icon for Research/Databases.

Find and click on the link for ResumeMaker. This should take you to the NorthEast Texas Library Systems page and it has a link for ResumeMaker.

By clicking where it says to "click here to continue" you will be sent to the ResumeMaker sign-in page. The first time you use it, you will have to click on the "CREATE ACCOUNT" button. Afterwards you can sign-in to return to your account and your work with the email address and password you set up when you created your account.

Once you have signed in, you will see there are a lot of options you have. Here are a few: Resumes & Letters (Starting a New Resume, Edit/View Your Resume, View Sample resumes, View Sample Cover Letters); Interview & Salary (Watch Interview Videos, See Sample Interview Questions, Check out Salary Finder); and other Job Search Tools.

Eagle Project To Benefit Sachse Library

Scouting For Books is an Eagle Project organized by Kyle Davidson and his friends / volunteers from his troop and church. His troop is Troop 2121 and his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They will be passing out this flier on February 3rd to Sachse Farms and Woodbridge, west of 78. Then on February 6th, volunteers will go out and collect any donations left on the doorsteps, and then donations will be organized into the library's storage room as they come in.

Kyle wants to remind you that the Library is always accepting donations of books, magazines, music CDs, VHS, and DVDs. A lot of these donations will be sold in a Friends of the Library Book Sale. The proceeds will be used to provide funds for special programs like the summer reading program. If you are not living in one of the areas where they will be collecting the books or other donations, please bring them to Sachse Library. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS WORTHWHILE PROJECT.

Sachse Library and Sachse Animal Shelter are teaming up this December. During December, the Library will be collecting donated supplies for the Sachse Animal Shelter. The supplies can definitely be used. You can be involved in this win-win situation as well. Here is how.

When you bring donated supplies to the Library during the month of December, the Library will remove up to $7.00 in fines from your library card. Don’t have any library fines? You still can be a winner knowing you helped the community with your donated supplies during this holiday season.

Here is a list of supplies that can be used:

Kroger and Friends - Working Together!!!

Wondering what this has anything to do with this post? Well .... let me tell you. Kroger has a program called Neighbor to Neighbor. Through this program they donate to various non-profits. Our organization - Friends of Sachse Library - just happens to be one of those non-profits. The past two years this program has been one of the successful fundraisers of our group. This is one of those ways we support the library and it's programs.

To be successful again this year, we need YOU!!! At this link (http://www.krogerneighbortoneighbor.com/pdf/10000081463.pdf) is a letter that explains how to link your Kroger Plus card to our organization. Print it out and take it to your Kroger the next time you shop. It only takes one time to link your Kroger Plus card to the Friends of Sachse Library. Then each time you shop at Kroger a portion will be placed in our account. At the end of this year's Neighbor to Neighbor program, a check will be made out to the Friends of Sachse Library. IT IS THAT SIMPLE!!! Thanks for YOUR help.

More Friends Fun!!!

You heard that right!!! Some of the Friends of Sachse Library got together for another evening of fun. We had a potluck dinner get together.

Of course we started out discussing a little business - important things like how we can support our library and it's community programs including the summer reading program. That is the reason we exist!!! This year's summer reading program is coming to a close and we heard about how successful it has been this year - in spite of a power outage than caused the postponement of the first event and in spite of the challenges presented by the construction work going on for the new city complex.

Once the business was taken care of we got down to some serious eating. A lot of delicious dishes were brought to our get together. And there were lots of requests for copies of the recipes. To make the evening even more enjoyable, several people shared about books they had read and what they liked about them. There were a number of good books talked about - fiction and non-fiction. Finally, there was a lot of just plain good conversation around the table.

If you missed out on the fun this time, do not worry because there are other fun times planned. Here are just a few of those:

Book Fair in collaboration with Barnes & Noble and Wylie Library. There will be several guest authors during this week long event.
Annual city-wide Sachse Fall Fest.
Dinner Out On The Town.
Family Game Night.
Chocolate Fest.

Friends NOT All Work - No Play

To make sure the record is straight - the Friends of Sachse Library are NOT All Work and no play. Last week five of our group got together to go to the Shakespeare Festival. They had a blast!!! They have decided to do it again - Thursday, July 16th to see Merry Wives of Windsor TX. Sounds fun!!! If you are interested in going, contact Sue.

Along similar lines, a group of Friends try to get together at the library to play Mah Jong as well. Check the calender to see when they are scheduled to PLAY again!!!

We are looking forward to doing MORE fun things in the future. Do you have any suggestions / ideas???

Summer Reading Program Starts ...

June 6th!!! Mark your Calendars!!! On Saturday, June 6th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM, the Summer Reading Pizza Kick-Off Party will be held at the library. In addition to having pizza, kids (and their parents) will be able to sign-up for the Summer reading Program. There will be other things that day as well. Come and join in the fun!!!

The theme for this year's Summer Reading Program is "Libraries: Deep in the Heart of Texas!"

This year we will be doubling the pleasure. All other scheduled summer reading events (except the award program) will be held twice on the day of the event. This is necessary because of the construction of new city facilities going on in the area and limited available parking. The first showing will be at 11:00AM and the second will be at 12:30PM. Learn how this works at the Kick-Off party on June 6th.

Library Recognition At City Council Meeting

Tonight at the City of Sachse Council meeting, three announcements were made about our local library.

First, it was announced our library has won it's third Achievement of Excellence in Libraries award. This award is given by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA). CONGRATULATIONS to Dolores Greenwald (our Director of Library Services) and the ladies who work with her.

Second, an announcement / kickoff of the READ program was shared with a sample of the READ poster shown to all in attendance.

Finally, a preview of the summer reading program was shared as well. The theme for this year's summer program is "Libraries: Deep In The Heart Of Texas!" The summer reading program kicks off in just a matter of weeks on June 6th. A lot of special events are scheduled. If you want to volunteer to help during the summer reading program, contact the ladies at the library (972-530-8966) for more specifics.

Saturday, April 18th started out as a dreary and rainy day. We were at Barnes and Noble at Firewheel Mall to celebrate National Library Week. In spite of the weather, we had a lot of help making this a successful day.

One of our most successful events each year is story time and we had a double treat this year. We had two storytellers this year. the first was the mayor of Sachse, Mike Felix. He has continued his string this year by being the first storyteller. Thanks mayor for your continued assistance. Our second storyteller was a surprise - Bill Adams, one of Sachse's city council persons. Thanks to you as well!!! Oh ... and gentlemen, there were several requests for an encore performance - way to go!!!

(By the way, the grapevine says this was just a debut for our newest storyteller. The grapevine says Bill Adams hopes to continue his storytelling ways at the Sachse Public Library soon. Keep your station tuned for more information!)

In addition to his storytelling, the mayor helped us out by cutting our "Celebrate National Library Week" cake. For a while there we were concerned about having too much cake. People passed up the cake because of diet or because they were going to have lunch. But there were plenty of takers and the cake disappeared. The cake was great!!! Several people came by and asked whose birthday it was .... which gave us the opportunity to spread the word about our own local library.

Of course another popular event was the face painting. This was VERY popular and you could tell by the number of faces (and arms) that were painted. Thanks to our face painting clown - Razzle Dazzle from Amazing Attractions.

This year we were also joined by the author of The Eden Diet - Rita Hancock, MD. It was nice to hear her say (before the cake arrived) that a good diet can include a little cake (LOL). Thanks for your help and best wishes with your book.

An Evening With Glen Pourciau

Mark your Calendar!!! The Friends of Sachse Library and the Woodbridge Book Club will be cosponsoring a “An Evening With Glen Pourciau”. This event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11th at 7:00PM in the library meeting room.

Glen Pourciau is an award-winning local writer who wrote Invite. Invite is a collection of short stories that won the Iowa Short Fiction Award. Also Glen’s short stories have won the Carter V. Cooper Memorial Prize and the Brazos Bookstore Award for Best Short Story from the Texas Institute of Letters. His work has also been cited in Best American Short Stories and nominated for Pushcart Prizes.

Come and hear Glen read a story from his book. Following the reading will be a question period and reception.

Did You Know ... Internet Access At The Library?

Did you know you can access the Internet from Sachse Library? There are two (2) ways you can access the Internet.

First, I imagine you have seen the personal computers available by the front desk. you can sign up to use one of them at the front desk.

Second, if you have a laptop with wireless capability, you can get on the Internet using a wireless connection. You can get directions on how to do this from one of the librarians at the front desk.

Now you know!!!

WFAA-TV: Libraries in Tight Times

Why Volunteer!!!

Why volunteer!!! You may have noticed this was a statement and NOT a question. Ultimately the answer to why volunteer is simple – to give back to the community. The only questions left to answer may be “who is the community?” and “how does the community benefit?”.

During the previous Christmas season, the Friends of Sachse Library participated in an excellent volunteer opportunity – thanks to Barnes and Noble at Firewheel Mall. Here is how it works. Barnes and Noble set up a gift wrapping table inside the store next to one of the entrances / exits. They ask volunteer groups to man the gift wrapping table for slots of time (we were scheduled for five time slots this season). When customers check out, the sales person tells them there is free gift wrapping for the gifts they have purchased and directs them to the gift wrapping table. The volunteers will gift wrap the gifts and the customer can make a donation to the organization represented by the volunteers. Sounds simple – right??

It is obvious the customer community benefited from the gift wrapping. They did not have to worry about buying the gift wrap (provided by Barnes and Noble) or wrapping the gifts (provided by the organization volunteers). But what other parts of the community benefit by this?

Barnes and Noble benefits from this in several ways. The most obvious is they have volunteers doing the gift wrapping. Another is the goodwill it shares with it’s customers.

The organization (and in our case the Friends of Sachse Library) also benefits. Not only do the customers get to know about our organization, some even may join it. Plus Barnes and Noble allows us to have other events scheduled in their store to promote the Sachse Library.

Of course the gift wrapping donations goes towards programs at the library that benefit our local community – children, teens, seniors, or future programs. So the circle goes round and round.

Volunteers benefit as well. One of the things I enjoyed about the Barnes and Noble event was greeting and speaking to the customers. I jokingly said I was practicing for when I retired and went to work as a greeter at Walmart. Well…, I am not retiring but I enjoyed the experience and the people I spoke to.

Why volunteer? WHY NOT!!! I am sure you can think of your own reasons to volunteer.
